Gwyneth Paltrow is an Oscar winning actor but today is perhaps better known for her lifestyle and wellness brand Goop. And she is the latest in a string of celebrities to invest in CBD products.

According to reports from CNBC, Paltrow has invested an unspecified amount into cannabis drinks company Cann. Headline grabbing investments in CBD products shows just how mainstream medicinal cannabis is becoming.

Celebrity endorsements always push a new market to the next level as consumers become more aware of their stance. And it’s the same with legal medicinal cannabis around the world. The market is booming not only in the US but is beginning to gain traction throughout Europe and the UK too.

Why are celebrities investing in legal CBD products?
When consumers see celebrities and high-profile people actively endorsing products by investing in them, they’re more likely to try them. And for the legal cannabis market, wellness advocates like Paltrow show that CBD products are not about weed or getting high, and all about wellbeing.

The world is ready for cutting-edge innovative health and wellness products. More and more people are taking their health into their own hands, and looking for products that can treat chronic pain, anxiety and depression. And more and more are turning to CBD products.

Paltrow has been involved with CBD products before and has been advocating for medicinal cannabis for a while. This recent announcement is indicative of a surge in popularity of the CBD beverage market in particular. Below are some other celebrities who are vocally in support of global legalisation of medicinal cannabis.

6 celebrity backers of medicinal cannabis

1. Actor Seth Rogen — medicinal cannabis for treatment of Alzheimer’s

Seth Rogen is best known for his roles in comedies like Superbad and Knocked Up. He has also been heavily involved in the discussion among US Congress about the state of research into treatments for Alzheimer’s. Rogen endorses the use of medicinal CBD for Alzheimer’s and has taken his testimony right to the top in a speech in front of Congress. This formed part of a wider Senate hearing about Alzheimer’s research.

2. Actor Whoopi Goldberg — medicinal CBD for glaucoma, pain and stress

Actor and presenter Whoopi Goldberg is clear on her support for medicinal CBD. She famously uses a vape pen to treat her own conditions, including chronic pain, glaucoma and stress. She also launched a CBD product brand called Whoopi and May in 2016.

3. Actor Morgan Freeman — medicinal THC and CBD for fibromyalgia

Freeman developed fibromyalgia after suffering a severe accident in 2008. Since then he has used CBD and THC to treat his chronic pain and is a strong advocate for the medicinal CBD industry.

4. Melissa Etheridge — medicinal CBD for cancer

Musician Melissa Etheridge has used medicinal CBD since being diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2004. Since then she has continued to use CBD products to treat the gastrointestinal issues suffered since going into remission from cancer.

5. Oliver Stone — cannabis and legal CBD for stress and PTSD
Before he began making hugely successful films, Stone fought in the Vietnam war. He found the readjustment to life after the war difficult and suffers with PTSD. Since then he has used cannabis to treat his symptoms and loudly advocates the legalisation of medicinal CBD to treat mental and physical illnesses.

6. Michael J Fox — medicinal cannabis for Parkinson’s disease

Michael J Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the height of his acting career and since then has taken part in all kinds of pioneering treatment. He found the medicinal benefits of cannabis and cannabinoids early on and is vocal about legalising medicinal cannabis.

Why celebrity investment in CBD products is important for the industry

When celebrities begin investing in products and talking about them in the mainstream media, this brings it to public attention. The more that legal CBD is brought into public debate, the better for an industry that is just starting to take off.

Most celebrity investment and backing is in the US for now, but we can expect Europe and the UK to follow suit. In the UK, medicinal cannabis has only been legal for four years, and is slower to become mainstream than across the Atlantic.

Booming industries attract celeb backers and CBD is no different. As the market continues to expand, we will see more big names investing in and advocating for legal medicinal cannabis products for everyone.
